Somalia President Hassan Sheikh makes landmark visit to BBS Mall

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday said Eastleigh has undergone significant changes over the past three decades.

He highlighted the remarkable development of Eastleigh since his last visit 32 years ago.

He observed that BBS mall alone now hosts 15 commercial banks.

Speaking at the BBS Mall, President Hassan reflected on Eastleigh’s evolution from a single-bank area to a commercial hub.

“The last time I came here was 32 years ago. How Eastleigh was at that time is far much different from how it is today,” he said.

He observed that BBS mall alone now hosts 15 commercial banks, a stark contrast to the one bank that existed during his previous visit.

President Hassan attributed Eastleigh’s growth to the welcoming nature of Kenya and its people. He expressed gratitude to Kenya for providing a haven for Somali investors during times of crisis in Somalia.

“When Somalia was in crisis and its people had nowhere to invest, Kenya provided a safe place,” he said, acknowledging the supportive role of Kenya in the development of Eastleigh.

The President also emphasised the strong current relationship between Kenya and Somalia, which facilitates discussions on internal and international issues.

“We discuss fighting Al-Shabaab, how to make the Horn of Africa more peaceful, and how to compete with other parts of Africa and the world,” he noted.

President Hassan’s visit to BBS Mall marked the second presidential visit to the mall, following President William Ruto’s visit in March.

He was accompanied by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Bare Duale and Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim. They were welcomed by Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan and the mall’s top leadership, led by Chairman Maalim Weli.
